Sports Health

  • Bone, Joint and Muscle Health

    gleneagles sports health

Walking, running, standing, jumping, bending, lifting, climbing – many of our daily activities require a functional, healthy musculoskeletal (bones, joints and muscles) system. However, certain stressors such as age-related wear and tear, high impact sporting activities, or unforeseen traumatic injury may damage our bones and joints.

At Gleneagles Hospital, we have over 50 orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians to help you achieve optimal musculoskeletal health even into the later stages of life. Supported by a dedicated team of more than 300 multidisciplinary specialists and healthcare professionals, we are on your side to treat any orthopaedic-related injury and assist you on the road to recovery.

Find out more on the key musculoskeletal disorders, how you may ease your financial burden when it comes to hospitalisation fees, and when to seek treatment.

  • Common Sports & Orthopaedic Conditions

  • Sports & Heart Health

The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body, supplying oxygen and helping to remove waste from the body. Exercise is proven to provide numerous benefits, such as improving heart function, lifting the mood and better sleep. However, it is important to be aware of underlying heart conditions before embarking on any rigorous sports activity. Here, we explore the effects of exercise on the heart, and what is sudden cardiac arrest – a condition that can befall seemingly healthy and sporty individuals, and what preventive measures can be taken to avert such incidents.

  • Sports & Respiratory Health

The lungs are a key part of the respiratory system. They deliver oxygen into the body from the air we breathe, while removing carbon dioxide and other waste. During exercise, the breaths becomes deeper and more frequent to meet the increased oxygen demands of the muscles at work. It is common to be short of breath during exercise, though in some cases, it could be due to exercise-induced asthma. Here, we explore the effects of exercise on the lungs, what is exercise-induced asthma, and the precautions when exercising with this condition.

  • Sports & Digestive Health

Running, swimming, tennis – staying physically active can lead to improved flexibility and better health. However, strenuous exercise may also lead to greater pressure to the gastrointestinal system, resulting in symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, acid reflux, constipation and cramps. This is especially so for those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Here, we explore the effects of exercise on the gastrointestinal system and what can be done to manage these conditions and minimise discomfort.

  • Managing Treatment Costs

At Gleneagles Hospital, we work with many local and international insurance partners to provide coverage on hospitalisation bills. If you have insurance coverage in the form of an Integrated Shield Plan (ISP), treatment may not incur additional out-of-pocket expenses.

Since 1 November 2015, Medishield Life has replaced Medishield. Singaporeans and Permanent Residents who contribute to the Central Provident Fund (CPF) may opt to purchase additional private insurance coverage on top of their Medishield Life. This translates to owning an Integrated Shield Plan (ISP), which provides access to higher coverage at private hospitals.

If you own an ISP, private healthcare is now even more accessible. Find out with examples how a patient may claim hospital fees from an ISP for treatments like shoulder rotator cuff surgery, knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and total knee replacement. Speak to our Gleneagles Bill Advisors at +65 6653 7566 to find out about your estimated bill size and how you can utilise your ISP to cover your treatment costs.
