Liver Transplant

  • Understanding the procedure

    Gleneagles Singapore, Bladeless Cataract Surgery

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body, working tirelessly to detoxify almost everything that enters the body.

    • Liver cirrhosis – the most common cause for liver transplants in adults. Liver Cirrhosis can be caused by viruses such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, excessive alcohol intake, autoimmune liver diseases; build-up of fats in the liver and hereditary liver diseases.
    • Biliary atresia – the most common cause for children to undergo liver transplants, where bile ducts (tubes that carry bile out of the liver) are either missing or damaged causing cirrhosis.
    • Other causes include liver cancer, benign liver tumors and hereditary diseases. Cryptogenic liver disease, where the cause of liver disease is unknown, is also another cause for liver transplant.

There are two main types of liver transplant:

    • Cadaveric Liver Transplant – the transplanted liver is obtained from a deceased donor. The majority of transplanted livers are obtained from brain dead organ donors after their consent.
    • Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) – a viable option when the current waiting period for a cadaveric donor liver might be too long, especially for patients with rapidly progressive diseases such as acute liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. LDLT is an important life-saving procedure for high-risk patients who might develop fatal complications before their turn for transplantation.
  • The donor evaluation process is extensive as it is our priority to minimise risk to both the recipient and the donor. Your donor will need to undergo a stringent medical evaluation, complete a questionnaire and have blood tests done to assess suitability.

The medical evaluation includes detailed assessments by independent doctors, infectious disease specialists, psychiatrists and other medical experts to determine suitability. The transplant coordinator will inquire about the donor's family, social and financial history to gather the necessary information for the Transplant Ethics Committee (a requirement by Singapore’s Ministry of Health for all organ transplants performed in Singapore). Personal questions may also be asked in assessing suitability as a donor.

  • When the liver fails, a living donor liver transplant provides hope for you and your family. Not only does it save lives, it also increases the number of available (cadaveric) organs for patients on the liver transplant waiting list.

Both you and the donor will be able to schedule the surgery at a convenient time for both parties. This flexibility in scheduling allows the transplant to occur sooner, which helps you avoid the progression of liver disease. As the healthy donor's liver is functional up till the point of transplant, you can benefit from improved long-term outcomes and also enjoy a quicker recovery.
