Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

  • What is Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)?

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a way of using X-rays and images (scans) of the body to guide the individual treatment. The X-rays and scans show the size, shape and position of the cancer.

The radiation therapy is planned to give a high dose of radiation directly to the cancer. The surrounding healthy tissue is given as low a dose as possible to reduce the risk of injury to these tissues.

  • By using IGRT, doctors can target the radiation more accurately. Each treatment is personalised, thus the planning can take longer than for some other treatments, with each therapy session possibly lasting longer as well.

As IGRT can track changes to the cancer throughout treatment, the treatment plan can be changed at any stage. This can result in:

    • Better treatment
    • More accurate and effective radiation therapy
    • Fewer side effects
