Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

  • What is Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)?

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a way of using X-rays and images (scans) of your body to guide your individual treatment. The X-rays and scans show the size, shape and position of your cancer.

The radiation therapy is planned so as to give a high dose of radiation directly to the cancer. The surrounding healthy tissue is given as low a dose as possible to reduce the risk of injury to these tissues.

  • By using IGRT, doctors can target the radiation more accurately. As treatment is personalised, the planning can take a bit longer than for some other treatments, and each therapy session may be a bit longer.

As IGRT is able to track changes to your cancer throughout treatment, your treatment plan can be altered at any stage. This can result in:

    • Better treatment
    • More precise and effective radiation therapy
    • Fewer side effects
