General Paediatric Surgery

  • What is General Paediatric Surgery?

Paediatric surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery that involves surgical procedures carried out on fetuses, infants, children and teenagers. Subspecialisation within paediatric surgery includes fetal surgery (performed on a foetus in the womb), neonatal surgery (performed on newborns), cardiothoracic (heart) surgery, neurology (nervous system), urology (urinary tract) and nephrology (kidneys).

Paediatric surgeons use minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures to treat conditions that need surgical treatment. General paediatric surgery requires multi-disciplinary participation from paediatric gastroenterologists, paediatric respiratory physicians, paediatric endocrinologists, dieticians and speech therapists.

  • Paediatric surgery can be used to manage and treat various children’s problems and conditions that need surgical involvement. Paediatric surgeons can carry out prenatal ultrasound scans on fetuses inside the womb, working with radiologists, to diagnose any fetal abnormalities. Depending on the results, they can plan corrective surgery and offer educational programmes for parents. Paediatric surgeons can also perform neonatal surgeries on ill or high-risk newborns, and can also repair any life-threatening congenital birth defects.

Children might also suffer from traumatic injuries that need surgical involvement, or may be suffering from benign and malignant (cancerous) tumours that need surgery for the fetremoval of the tumours. Other common types of paediatric surgery include ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures like tonsil removal (tonsillectomy) and placement of tubes in the ears (to treat ear infections). Paediatric surgeons also work with other specialists to treat abnormalities of the kidney, spleen, gastrointestinal (digestive) tract, as well as a wide range of other paediatric surgeries.
