Paediatric surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery that involves surgical procedures carried out on fetuses, infants, children and teenagers. Subspecialisation within paediatric surgery includes fetal surgery (performed on a foetus in the womb), neonatal surgery (performed on newborns), cardiothoracic (heart) surgery, neurology (nervous system), urology (urinary tract) and nephrology (kidneys).
Paediatric surgeons use minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures to treat conditions that need surgical treatment. General paediatric surgery requires multi-disciplinary participation from paediatric gastroenterologists, paediatric respiratory physicians, paediatric endocrinologists, dieticians and speech therapists.
