  • What is a PET-MRI Scan?

PET-MRI is a new medical camera that performs both positron-emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at the same time. PET provides information on how an organ in the body is working with the use of a radioactive substance (a tracer). MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to provide images of any part of the body from any angle.

The simultaneous use of PET and MRI provides more detailed and enhanced imaging than either procedure alone. This new hybrid imaging technology aims to supply information on the causes, effects and development of various diseases.

  • PET-MRI has the potential to detect and diagnose certain complex cancerous growths, including cancers of the neck, pelvis, and neck, with high level of accuracy and confidence. This technique allows doctors to provide better disease and treatment planning, therefore improving your care. The scan also allows the doctor to monitor how certain drugs are travelling in your body to determine how well they are working. With the use of PET-MRI, researchers are able to monitor stem cells (undifferentiated biological cells) as they are maturing and transforming into different types of body tissues.
