Magnetic Resonance Arthrography (MRA)

  • What is Magnetic Resonance Arthrography (MRA)?

Magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) is widely used to look at the joints, eg. hip, shoulder or wrist. MRA is similar to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but shows better images because a contrast solution called gadolinium is given to swell the joint, outline joint structures and show any soft tissue tears and defects. MRA is a good way to look at swollen joints and can be done for any joint.

  • Magnetic resonance arthrography is designed to diagnose joint problems with the use of the contrast agent. When the contrast agent is introduced into the joint, it enhances the view of the joint structures and improves the evaluation of any joint abnormalities.
