Pelvic Floor Reconstruction and Incontinence Surgery

  • What is pelvic floor reconstruction & incontinence surgery?

Pelvic floor reconstruction is a surgical procedure that is done for severe pelvic organ prolapse in women. The pelvic floor includes the muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and nerves that support and control the bladder, uterus (womb), vagina and rectum (bowel). The pelvic floor holds these structures in place. When the pelvic floor weakens and can no longer support the weight of your pelvic organs, one or more of your organs may drop or ‘prolapse’ below their normal position, and press against the walls of your vagina. These sagging or falling organs can cause pain, discomfort and pressure in the vagina as well as urinary and bowel symptoms.

Pelvic floor reconstruction surgery usually consists of one of several different procedures for correcting pelvic organ prolapse. The goal of surgery is to restore the normal structure and function of your pelvic organs. There are different strategies and procedures for each type of prolapse and the treatment will depend on the severity of your prolapse.

  • When non-surgical treatments for pelvic organ prolapse aren't effective, pelvic floor reconstruction is used to restore the normal structure and function of your pelvic organs. Surgery to correct pelvic organ prolapse can be performed through the vagina or through the abdomen depending on the problem and the chosen treatment. The objectives of the surgery are to relieve your symptoms, and restore normal vaginal anatomy and sexual function. Your gynaecologist will help you to reach a decision on the best treatment for you.
