  • Dr Chang Haw Chong, an orthopaedic surgeon, has more than 10 years experience in the field. At his Mount Elizabeth Novena clinic, he provides specialised care in orthopaedic sports medicine.
  • Following his graduation from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1994), he completed his basic training and went on to specialise in General Surgery (FRCS Edinburgh and Glasgow, 1998). The same year, he obtained his Master of Medicine in General Surgery from the National University of Singapore. In 2001, Dr Chang became the first orthopaedic trainee from Singapore to be inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (Orthopaedics) when it was made a requirement for exit certification for orthopaedic training in Singapore.
  • Then, through the Health Manpower Development Programme scholarship, he trained as a Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA. There he was mentored by Professor David NM Caborn, a leading sports orthopaedic surgeon in the USA, with a special interest in the use of allograft tissues for sports reconstructive surgeries and in meniscus transplantations.
  • Prior to setting up his private practice, Dr Chang served as a consultant at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Changi General Hospital. During his tenure, he served as the Deputy Head of the Changi Sports Medicine Centre (CSMC), where he was instrumental in setting up the Orthopaedic Sports Service. In 2007, he was appointed Director of the Service. He also initiated the Centre’s Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) programme in 2004, which treat more than 250 patients annually.
  • Teaching and training younger generations of doctors and surgeons is an aspect of medicine that Dr Chang has dedicated his time to. He is a Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at National University of Singapore and was awarded "Best Orthopaedic Teacher" for consecutive terms (2003-2004 and 2005-2006). He also trained surgeons from the Asian region in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine while he was in Changi General Hospital. To train local and international orthopaedic surgeons in advanced techniques, he organised cadaveric workshops in shoulder arthroscopy, knee double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as well as autologous chondrocyte transplantation.
  • An avid researcher, Dr Chang has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers. Some of these include articles in prestigious Sports Medicine journals such as the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Journal. Dr Chang has also contributed a book chapter on "Allograft Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction" in the 4th edition of Insall and Scott Surgery of the Knee, a highly-respected reference book for knee surgeons. In addition, he co-authored a new surgical technique in double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
  • In recognition of his vast knowledge and experience, Dr Chang has been invited to speak on many issues related to sports medicine, at local and international meetings. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the Singapore Medical Journal.
