  • Dr Barrie Tan is an ENT specialist at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.
  • He subspecialises in cochlear implant surgery, hearing implant surgeries, endoscopic ear surgeries, ear tumours, hearing loss, tinnitus and giddiness management.
  • He treats a range of ENT conditions such as paediatric ear, nose and throat disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, hoarseness, vocal cord nodules, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, parotid tumours, enlarged neck lymph nodes, and recurrent tonsillitis.
  • He has been performing endoscopic ear surgeries at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) since 2014 and has performed over 100 endoscopic ear surgeries to date.
  • Dr Tan has performed more than 200 cochlear implant surgeries, and is sought after to perform and supervise cochlear implant surgeries in hospitals in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
  • He performs surgeries implanting the newest hearing implants such as the BAHA Attract implant (suitable for both adults and children), Bonebridge implant, Vibrant Soundbridge Implant, Cochlear Carina implant as well as cochlear implantation in the very young child and after acoustic neuroma tumour removal.
  • From 2013 – 2019, he headed the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) at SGH and was also the director of the hospital’s Centre for Hearing and Ear Implants.
  • He is currently the president-elect of the ASEAN Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (ENT) Head and Neck Surgery Societies, and the secretary-general of the ASEAN Academy of Neuro-Oto-Audiology. He is also currently an executive board member of the Asia-Oceania Association of Otolaryngological Societies.
  • He was the president of the Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Singapore (SOHNSS) from 2017 – 2019.
  • He organised the very first Cochlear Implant Surgery Course at SGH in 2017 and has proceeded to run this course annually since.
  • He has presented at international and regional conferences including the American Academy of Otolaryngology Annual Congress, the CI2018 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium, and the International Congress on ORL in Seoul, South Korea.
  • Dr Tan is the president of the 18th ASEAN Federation of ORL HNS Societies Congress being held in Singapore in August 2019. He was also the conference president of the 6th ASEAN Academy of Neuro-Oto-Audiology (AANOA) Congress held in Singapore in 2016.
  • He was also the scientific program chairperson of the 7th Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implants and Related Sciences in 2009.
  • Dr Tan is a special advisor and member of the Civil Aviation Medical Board. He has also consulted and advised on patients involving pilots with complex ENT conditions. He is also the ENT visiting consultant to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Medical Corps and has contributed to the design and updating of the classification status of servicemen with ENT Conditions in the SAF.
  • He has previously advised the Ministry Of Health Agency of Care Effectiveness and served on the Ministry of Health select committee workgroup to recommend the guidelines on government sponsored subsidies for Bilateral Paediatric Cochlear Implants and on unilateral Adult Cochlear Implants.
  • Dr Tan has a passion to inspire the next generation of ENT surgeons. As the director of the SingHealth ENT Residency Training Program from 2012 – 2014, he organised and oversaw the successful American College of Graduate Medical Education – International (ACGME-I) site accreditation of the SingHealth Residency Program for a period of 4 years in 2013.
  • He was instrumental in the initiation and formation of the SingHealth-Duke NUS Head and Neck Centre, the first cross institution multidisciplinary unit in Singapore dedicated to the development of Head and Neck Surgery clinical, education and research capabilities. He served as the deputy head from 2014 – 2018.
  • Dr Tan started a new ENT department in the Sengkang General Hospital in 2013, and was concurrently the pro-tem head of the Department of Otolaryngology there from 2013 – 2018. During that time, he carefully recruited medical and nursing manpower and planned for the development of this new department in Singapore.
  • Dr Tan was awarded the President’s Scholarship to study medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1994.
