Dr Lie Kwok Ying is a urologist at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.
His clinical interests include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney and bladder cancers, kidney stone surgery and hernia surgery.
Before joining private practice, Dr Lie was a senior consultant in the urology service at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH).
He graduated from Queens’ College in Cambridge University with triple first class honours. He received his surgical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and then a master’s degree. He obtained his urology training at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the National University Hospital, and was elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK.
Dr Lie is one of the earliest urologists to obtain high-power laser platforms in Singapore, thereby improving stone and BPH care for patients. He was awarded a Ministry of Health fellowship to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide where he pursued his interest in BPH. Since returning to Singapore, he became the earliest urologist to perform HoLEP (Holmium Enucleation of Prostate) in Singapore, and is one of the earliest fellowship-trained and locally-accredited surgeons to perform this procedure.
Since starting the HoLEP service at NTFGH, he has done more than 200 HoLEPs, including patients on anticoagulants and patients who are seniors. He also set up the use of CO2 lasers in male circumcision and the Rezum steam therapy as a minimally invasive technique for BPH at NTFGH.
Dr Lie is also actively involved in educating the next generation of urologists and is the site director for the urology residency programme at NTFGH and supervisor for the diploma in urology run by the Chapter of Urologists, College of Surgeons. He is currently a member of the Chapter of Urologists, College of Surgeons and the honorary secretary of the Singapore Urological Association.
He is the recipient of the Service with a Heart Award at SGH as well as a Long Service Award at NTFGH. He was actively involved in patient care in public hospitals during SARS in 2003 and the COVID-19 pandemic.
