Dr Kelvin Thia is a gastroenterologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His clinical interests include treating complex disorders of the digestive system such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr Thia is currently a visiting consultant at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was formerly a consultant gastroenterologist in SGH’s department of gastroenterology and hepatology where he managed patients with Crohn’s disease in the department’s IBD centre and supervised gastroenterology trainees, junior doctors and medical students.
He obtained his bachelor degrees and master's degree in internal medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He also took a master's in clinical investigation at NUS. Dr Thia is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK, a fellow of the Academy of Medicine in gastroenterology, and a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association.
In 2007, he received the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship from the Ministry of Health to train as an advanced fellow at the Mayo Clinic in the US. He participated in IBD-related research, which led him to receive the Centocor Inflammatory Bowel Disease Best Abstract Award at the American College of Gastroenterology meeting in 2008 for an original work on the natural history of Crohn’s disease.
He was a former director of the Nutrition Support Services, where he led a team of medical and allied health staff to provide parenteral (through veins) and enteral (through feeding tube) nutrition to patients with malabsorption disorders, such as short bowel syndrome. In 2011, Dr Thia received an award for his clinical service and was also certified as a nutrition support clinician by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
Dr Thia received the National Research Foundation-Ministry of Health Healthcare Research scholarship in 2009 to 2011, the SingHealth Research Talent Development Fund Publication Award in 2010 and the SingHealth Outstanding Publication Award in 2011 for his research publications. He has also been invited as a peer reviewer for gastroenterology journals. He has more than 20 years of experience practising medicine.
He was appointed clinical tutor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and a clinical physician faculty member of the SingHealth’s internal medicine residency programme.
