Dr Wee Siew Bock is a general surgeon practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disorders, with an emphasis on minimally invasive diagnostic techniques and early treatment of breast cancer with breast conserving surgery.
Dr Wee graduated from the medical school of the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1985. He then completed specialist training in general surgery and was conferred both the Master of Medicine in surgery from NUS and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 1990.
Dr Wee subsequently pursued subspecialty training in breast cancer and endocrine surgery. This included a training stint in Sydney, Australia that was sponsored by a national surgical training scholarship award by the Singapore government.
Dr Wee was formerly the head of the breast and endocrine surgical service at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), where he was involved in reorganising the clinical breast service. He made key contributions to the management of breast diseases in the area of image-guided percutaneous breast biopsy, a minimally invasive diagnosis of breast tissue damage. He was the 1st local surgeon to incorporate image-guided mammotome biopsy into the breast service of a restructured hospital.
Dr Wee was also appointed the chief of breast surgery at the National Cancer Centre (NCC) and was a visiting surgeon to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Kandang Kerbau Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and TTSH. His appointment at NCC allowed him to organise, coordinate and develop management practices for breast cancer.
Dr Wee co-chaired a ministry-appointed committee to look into the development of clinical practice guidelines for the management of breast cancer in Singapore. He has been actively involved in the planning and execution of the national breast cancer screening programme since its launch in 2002. He has also been involved in activities of the breast cancer awareness month in Singapore since its inception in 1997. Dr Wee served on the committee of the Chapter of Surgeons of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore.
